You may recall a few weeks back when we reported on Houston’s Bun B receiving his own day and also being an assistant professor at Rice University. All is well with Bun B though, this story however, refers to a former VP of his UGK Records. According to a report by hip hop website, hiphopdx.com, former Vice President of UGK Records, Byron Amos was recently running for a position on the Atlanta School Board. Amos was initially receiving a lot of support from the Atlanta Federation of Teachers. However, when it was discovered that Amos was once V.P. of UGK Records, and also appeared in several videos for the group, the ATL Federation of Teachers decided not to support Amos. Instead, they want him off the ballad. Here’s what the president of Southwest Northwest Atlanta Parents and Partners for Schools, Shawnna Hayes Tavarez says: “For him to actually want to run for the board and say that he cares about children, when what he’s doing is using this music to do the worst for our children,” “It’s like robbing them and killing them. It’s like cheating for them.” Despite the statement from Hayes, it’s also being reported that Amos has been active in education and the community for years. In addition, he has children who attend the Atlanta public school system. This is an interesting story, because perhaps maybe Amos feels he has more of a connection with the children, due to his understanding of the culture, and having his own children attend the school system. In addition, maybe this is the Atlanta’s school systems attempt to steer clear of any controversy. You may recall they were in the news recently, when it was discovered that school officials were altering standardized test answers to generate higher test scores for students. So based on this, we would like to know what you think should be done. Do you agree with the Atlanta Parents and Partners for Schools when they say Amos should not be on the school board?
